11:37 AM

So you want to start a sewing business? That is great! Super exciting and scary too right?

Well, I am here to give you an essential tool for you to use before you jump into starting your sewing business.
This tool is called a SWOT analysis. Simply put, a SWOT analysis is used by big and small businesses to assess their Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. This helps identify internal and external influences that could affect how the business performs. Let's jump into it.

So before you start your sewing business be sure to do a personal SWOT analysis:

STRENGTHS:
  • What advantage do you have?
  • What do you do well?
  • What unique qualities do you have other's don't?
  • What do other people recognize you do well?
  • Is there something, in particular, you love to sew and you sew it well?
        Next look at your

     WEAKNESSES:

Be absolutely honest with yourself here. padding the truth will not help you in any way. If it's hard to come up      with anything ask someone close to you to tell you

  •       What could you improve on
  •       What should you avoid?
  •       What might people see as your weakness
After assessing these take a look at

     OPPORTUNITIES
  •       What opportunities could you take advantage of?
  •       What trends could you take advantage of?
  •       What local events can I be a part of?
  •       Are there lifestyle changes I could use to my advantage?
  •       Can I collaborate with other seamstresses?

    THREATS
  •       Who is your competition
  •       What does the economy look like and will it affect you?
  •       Are you financially stable?
  •       What challenges do you face?
  • What is your competition doing to stay ahead
  • Could any of your weaknesses seriously threaten your business?
  • Is the change in technology affecting your potential?

Ok so once you analyze everything in this framework, it gives you an overview of which direction to go, what to work on or what to abandon. This could also give you an advantage over your competitors. No use going into business blindly or trying to wing it. You want to have the best advantage to get into business and stay there. Use your strengths to maximize your opportunities and to help you tackle your weaknesses.

I hope you found this analysis helpful as you think about taking the next steps to starting your sewing business.
