I finally received my fabric from Stylish Fabrics. I forgot that I had ordered one yard of Fuschia Crepe to get the free shipping so when I opened it I didn't know what to do with it. Eventually, I thought a top would be perfect and since statement sleeves are still trending, I figured why not. I had a zipper that had been sitting around too so I thought that would add a nice touch of uniqueness to it.
Inspired by Ann Taylor's Version of this top (Sold out) I used M7542 for inspiration but from my original makes, I remembered that the bust area felt funny so I decided to do away with the darts.
If you do not have this pattern I suggest tracing a top that is your favorite fit like I did. It really is a sleeveless dress but I realized it was super easy to trace out and an easy way for me to avoid the darts. Remember to cut out your seam allowance and in my case, I also had to cut out sleeves and I went back to the pattern for that.
That's about it and this is my final look and a few variations on how to wear the top.

1:59 PMTutorial is finally up....Finally right. Guys life gets in the way I tell you, but it's finally up. The majority of the tutorial is showing how to design the pattern for the bell sleeve and attaching it. The dress part of the tutorial can be seen from the previous video How to Sew A White Bell Sleeve Off the Shoulder Bodycon Dress. Other than that it's a fairly easy tutorial to follow.
I have been getting a lot of questions about fabric and I absolutely understand because I struggle with fabric selection too. So here are some links to suggested fabric.

So I have been working on a little something, but I can't churn it out as quick as I want to LOL. Anyways thank you for the support of this Turtle Neck Choker Dress inspired by Cuchnie Et Ochs
I will not beat about the bush. I have not done a video tutorial for this but plan to (story of my life. So many pending projects). In the meantime, if you really want to know how I achieved this look The quick guide is here.
I am introducing the Love it Sew it Wear it movement which is really about being inspired by looks you either can't afford or can't get quick enough or even don't trust the quility of what you will get (Yes China Knock Off I am bashing you LOL) We will either free hand, create a pattern or use existing sewing patterns to achieve the looks we want. I am passionate about this and if you have noticed already, that is what I have been doing. I would love you to go on this journey with me and thank you for all of you who already have. Let's make some fabulous pieces that we love inspired by what we see with skills and resources we already have
Love you guys

I finally got a chance to sit down and write about my Harlem Fashion Row Memphis Event Experience. "Harlem Fashion Row (HFR) is a unique movement founded to increase diversity in fashion, by producing events to educate, stimulate, and advance opportunities for emerging designers of color. The organization was founded by Memphis native Brandice Henderson Daniel in 2007." Every 5 years Brandice comes to Memphis and hosts an event in honor of where she is from.
To be honest I had never heard about the organization and when I saw a friend had been tagged in the event, I actually thought it would be in New York. I later found out through the same friend who was tagged that it was happening in Memphis and she thought it would be a great event for me to attend as an emerging designer. Lesson: Recognize those people in your corner who see something in you and work on encouraging you to bring out your best.
The event was held at Clayborn Temple in downtown Memphis and this venue was pivotal in the civil rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King spoke here several times and this was where the Memphis sanitation workers would meet for community and strategy meetings. They eventually went on strike and marched from the Clayborn Temple to City Hall. (sitting where history happened)
The event included 3 sessions, breakfast with Mikki Taylor, Editor at Large of Essence, and mini-conference featuring secrets of the fashion industry with fashion insiders. The event was concluded with a fashion show featuring Memphis Designers Tiena, The Gift Wrap, Demi Blvck, Black Cholo of immortal ink, Undra Duncan an emerging New York Fashion designer and Korto Momolu (pronounced Cut.Toe) from Project Runway season 5.
I was highly impressed by the quality, finishing, and designs of each line. My favorite was Tiena because her fashion was more transferable to real life Love it. The breakfast with Mikki was very insightful and she was an absolute well of knowledge and very humble. These were a few nuggets gleaned from her and the rest of the pictures of the event.

I had ordered some fabric online (crepe viscose) for a jumpsuit I was going to make but didn't quite like the texture and feel for the look I was going for. I put it to the side for a later project and here it is . I ended up making another jumpsuit.
I know I wanted a kimono top style and had a great pattern in mind, can you guess which one? V9253 which I hacked to make into a coat (Blog Post here). I skipped the zipper and opted for a V back higher than the front V neck. I also used the bottom part of V9075 and instead of pleating it, I gathered and added an elastic. This was an easy make and I love love how it fits feels and looks. Also works great as off the shoulder and you know I like some off shoulder action. What do you think? Want one? Get in touch with me to set up an appointment for your custom piece. Book here
